Hangout Music Festival 2011

I had a really great time at the Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama this past weekend.  I left on Thursday afternoon and arrived 8 hours later in the beautiful Gulf-coast town.  The festival started on Friday and for 3 DAYS straight I boogied, grooved, and jammed.  It was awesome!!!

I got to see so many friends that I haven't seen since I moved home in December.  I had the opportunity to see 'LIVE' a whole bunch of awesome bands that I probably would have had a hard time getting to if they weren't all at this beachy fest!!! I ate lots of good food, got kissed by the sun, and spent my days jammin' out in a bikini and water-soaked bandana on my head.... it was HOOTTTTTT!!!!

My favorite shows were Widespread Panic, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Xavier Rudd, Madeski Martin & Wood, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Primus, The Black Keys, and PAUL SIMON (he was absolutely off the richter scale!).  We had 'church with Paul' on Sunday night to close out the weekend and let me tell you... it was epic.  He promised us he'd be back next year!

Who's coming with me!?!

Oh yeah... and one night I got tagged by those crazy paint dancers!  It was like a game of "tag your it" with paint and I was one of the chosen ones! Holla?!? I don't know, I thought it was nifty.. It came right off in the shower (once I finally got to one) so it was no worries. And Jackie joined me in the fun and let me tag her after I was tagged. Oh, besties!

Her Dance Needs No Body

Her dance needs no body, no body at all.

She is both darkness and light.

I love when people send me music, and I especially love waking up to something like this on a Monday morning.  Knowing that someone thought of me when they heard this song, and it being my favs - Widespread Panic - makes me so darn happy and proud that my darker days AND shining moments have been influential and inspirational to others.  I love hearing about me inspiring others.  I love knowing that when music moves someone, they like to tell me about it because they know I've been moved and danced along to a musical journey throughout my battle with depression.  From cloud 9 to the flaming glimpses of hell I've gone through, music has been my constant therapy.  The Lord has been my bass player.  I have been the dancer.  And now I'm ready to be the singer.  I'm ready to take over and sing the song that the Lord wants me to and spread it to others.

It is Spring and almost Summer...
and you know that means I'm in jam mode!
Go ahead and be prepared for music taking over this blog ;)

zach deputy show. orlando, fl

Zach Deputy
at
The Plaza Live

The show was unbelievable.
My entire night was, actually.

Groovy is an understatement when it comes to describing what fun I had and how much joy it brought me to reconnect with an old friend through music.  It is funny - the friendships that are born when two souls share the same respect for beatnik jams.  I don't know, maybe others don't see it in the same way that I do - but it's pretty beautiful.  Music just has a way of speaking to people - that is, if you are really listening.  That is something that I have come to learn in this ever-adventurous musical journey I have found myself on over the past few years.

Maybe that is why I have so much love for the friend that introduced me to this uniquely styled music.  He saw me hurting and in such pain and he knew that music could free me, so he made me listen to Widespread Panic and Phish until I just could not get enough of it.  I still can't... that's why it's so awesome that these bands JUST PLAY MUSIC.  Their song encyclopedias are endless... they could fill an entire iPod's memory space on their own I am sure - they live to play music and they play music to live.
I realized, in the deepest crevice of my depression, that I must have music to live.

I'm one of those people who just comes to life when the music starts.  I can't sit down at a concert and when I am standing, I am definitely not standing still.  I am a wildflower dancer... a wiggler... a bouncer... a hip-swiveler... a jammer.

So last night, when I met up with an old friend who I reconnected with over our shared music interests, I was delighted to find out that he is a jam-head, too!  We did not stay still the entire night and were in disbelief at how anyone could stand there and not dance to Zach Deputy's stellar performance last night.

Not sure what's up with my eyes!
It's that weird, theater show lighting!
(Not the fact that I don't have a soul because truuuuust me, I've got some soul... and Zach Deputy brought it out of me last night!)

So I grooved out with some fellow ecclectics and had such a kick-ass time - and to be honest, I've had a little rhythm in my step all day... I just can't keep from feeling SO GOOD today after I danced all of my worries out last night.  They are gone - Good riddance, anxiety!

The show was also a good excuse to meet new people that shared similar taste in music to me.  I met up with Ryan and a couple of his buddies (one gave us free tickets to the show - score!) and I got to witness the tail end of their own little jam-session in the living room of a UCF student's home.  Even though I don't go/didn't go to UCF, I felt so comfortable and "normal" being on a beer-soaked hand-me-down couch, listening to guy-friends' electric and bass guitars and any other instrumentalists that feel like partaking in the "session."  It's college.
A normal week-day night for the music lovin' college kid.

Jam a little, catch a live show, and talk about the festivals you plan on attending in the upcoming months.  And that is what we did.  It was perfect!!!

I hope these cool cats invite me along for more shows and living room jam sessions!

Oh yea, did I mention I love music?

You know you want to check out Zach Deputy's blog.

weekly recap

in one word or phrase:
all that i need now is in my soul

i'm dreaming of you:
no more aches & pains, holding baby Piper, and a love that is equally yoked in faith (my nana's best friend reminded me that I deserve that most!)

songs on repeat:
shinedown's tribute to lynyrd skynyrd's SIMPLE MAN
click here - you HAVE to see it....

and ben harper's "diamonds on the inside" which is pretty personally moving to me...

gotta write it down:

"if i didn't define myself for myself, i would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive." -audra lorde
i couldn't agree more with this right now.

"everybody has difficult years, but a lot of times the difficult years end up being the greatest years of your entire life." -brittany murphy
rip. i seriously miss her. she was an actress i always felt connected to, personality-wise.  and for the record, i think of that as a good thing (in case there are any murph-haters out there!)

lesson learned:
God has someone AMAZING for me, He is just preparing our hearts for one another! :)

picture to frame:
my alma mater OVIEDO HIGH SCHOOL won the 6a state championship for girls soccer.  and if you know me - you know my heart belongs to that lady lion soccer program.  my sister was a 4-year varsity letterman and i was a 3-year varsity letterman in soccer.  i was proud to represent 'the jonesies' and see the program win it's first ever state title and become one of the state's most elite programs!! congrats girls and a special congratulations to COACH WAISANEN!!!

the one about south carolina and my hiatus being over

I feel like I have been hounded via Facebook, Twitter, Gmail. and Blogger on my crazy hiatus I have been on.  No need to worry, I have plenty to talk about but it seems like I never sit down and start writing like I used to. I have pretty much stayed on the go for a few weeks now.

I went to Charleston to visit Clay for the weekend.  It was a really good time.  We got to see a couple of our favorite performers.  American Aquarium played at The Charleston Pour House on Thursday night and Zach Deputy played their on Saturday night.  When Clay and I's relationship began, we sort of had a little band crush on American Aquarium, who his older siblings had told us about.  Then, the Zach Deputy crush developed for him over the past couple of years but as I was leaving him to go back to Tuscaloosa after our first visit, he handed me a CD to listen to on the way home.  Well, actually, he handed me a couple of CDs to listen to on the drive home because they had so many songs with lyrics that sort of explained the connection we had upon our face-to-face meeting.  We had already known before our physical meet & greet that we shared a love for the same type of 'peace and love' music.  American Aquarium is a little bit more Southern Rock and Americana, but they still have some pretty fun and danceable songs that we both enjoy :) But Zach Deputy, he's pretty amazing with his "one man band" type of style.  He's even an awesome writer: check out his blog at www.zachdeputy.blog.com.  Check out his website at www.zachdeputy.com. He's pretty awesome!

American Aquarium, like I said, is a different style but I'm a frequent visitor of their website at www.americanaqurium.net

Zach Deputy was really cool after the show.  He gave us a couple free live recordings and I told him that he really needed to come visit Tuscaloosa, ALABAMA.  No, I didn't really say it like Forrest Gump but I wish I had.  Maybe he would have remembered me better if I did.  I sort of looked like Jenny that night though, come to think of it.  Clay & I had told ourselves we were going to dress up.  Well, I ended up leaving half of my 'Penny Lane' costume parked in a car on the other side of town and it was looking doubtful that he was really up for being too extravagant in regard to the Halloween spirit, so we just opted to throw some reg clothes on and go back to The Pour House and look at all the other people's awful, and awfully funny costumes.  Before we went, though, we turned one of my favorite bracelets made of chiffon fabric and silver and gold chains into a headband with the linking of my hair ties.  I was sort of proud of my idea, and he helped with the engineering part.  Stellar teammates! :)  But, I wore the hippie headband and jeans and boots and called it a Happy Halloween.  Especially the part about the point I was trying to make... after the show (which was so much fun - I have, by far, the best dancing partner in the world) we got a chance to talk to Zach Deputy and after I tried to convince him to come to "Titletown" - which I think is the term for Tuscaloosa I used - we gave him an Alabama coozie for giving us those free live recordings.

Baily + Clay + Zach Deputy = BFF

We walked along King Street, partied down in Chucktown, shopped at the Market where I found some AWESOME Guatemalan worry dolls that I purchased for the two of us, we ate fish that would melt in your mouth, and we drank a bucket of beers at "Reds" on a canal by a marina at Shem Creek.  We had an awesome time.  And before we left Charleston Sunday, we were able to spend a little time at Boone Hall Plantation.  (YES girlfriends - where Allie's summer house is in 'The Notebook'!!!!)  I was very very excited that we were able to do this because at first we thought it wasn't going to make it on the weekend agenda, but it happened to work out to where we were able to tour the plantation where we learned about the Gullah nation of the South Carolina low-country, and about the most photographed plantation in America.   IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!!

Then the next week we went to Asheville (which I've already uploaded photos of via facebook) but I'll tell you more about that weekend LaTeR!! For now, I'll leave you with some pics of my wonderful weekend in Charleston....
